2013-12-03: Jackson Citizen Patriot: Football and Volleyball

Football and volleyball have taken up a lot of my time and assignments since I've been in Jackson. Volleyball especially. I always feel like getting a new volleyball image is so hard! I spend so much of my time making sure I get what I know is runnable and covering my ass, it is hard to take risks. But as the season progressed, I started to figure out a formula that seemed to work the best. Grab a feature in the beginning, shoot two games in the match from as high up as you can, so you get both teams blocking and spiking, spend the third game and any thing else taking risks. Go down low, shoot the bench, shoot really tight and miss more often, but get something more intriguing when it works out, wait for digs, etc. These are just a few from some recent games. I don't want to inundate my blog with mediocre, indoor volleyball photography, but I know my coverage, as a journalist, has improved over the past few months, though I don't know if it is visually stunning or portfolio worthy.

Also, included, are photos from a really fun, daytime football game. I shot with a 400 with a 1.4 tele and end lurked in the end zone for most of the game and it was a good experience to play around with.

Thanks!

2013-12-3: Jackson Citizen Patriot: Lots of Singles

I've been terrible at blogging my work from Jackson, so I have this giant influx of work I want to show.

Here are some random odds and ends from my assignments from the end September through the end of November.

As always, thanks so much for looking,

2013-11-29: Jackson Citizen Patriot: High School Football

Heyo,

I learned quickly that a smaller town means a lot of the news, sports and excitement from the town often comes from the younger generation, i.e. high school football.

I also learned quickly that any game after the first of the season is played majorly in the dark, or just after the sun has set. This meant high ISO's cold hands, and cycling lights. But it was fun and challenging to try and make a 20+ photo gallery in a way less than ideal way to shoot sports. Here are some of my favorites from the majority of the season.

I did a blog post on my first game that can be found here. It's been fun looking back through these. I know it's a lot of photos, but I appreciate the eyes!

Thanks for taking a peek,

Grant
